Spell Bee

Objectives

• To improve English vocabulary and spelling skills.
• To encourage correct pronunciation and word usage.
• To promote confidence in public speaking.

Eligibility

• Open to all registered Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.
• Open to all registered Higher Secondary students.
• 2 maximum participants from each institution. 

Competition Format
Round 1: Preliminary Written Round

• All participants will be asked to spell a set of 3 words (10 points for each correct word) that will include basic to moderate words.
• Spellers who meet a minimum correct score advance to the next round

Round 2: Elimination Round

• The speller will be given one word to spell.
• If the first word is spelled correctly, the speller will be awarded 10 points.
• The speller may also be given the option to provide an alternative word and if spelled correctly, the speller will be awarded 50% of the full marks, i.e. 5 points.
• Therefore, the maximum score for each word is 10 points.
• Correct spelling allows the participant to proceed to the next round.
• Incorrect spelling results in elimination.

Round 3: Final Round

• Spellers will be given 2 Words (20 points each)
• Finalists compete until winners are determined.
• Among the finalists, the speller who achieves the highest cumulative score across all rounds will be declared the champion.

Rules for Participants

• Both British and American English spellings can be used.
• The pronouncer will give a clear pronunciation of the word, use it in a sentence, and provide its meaning if requested.
• Participants may request:
  • Repetition of the word.
  • Meaning of the word.
  • Usage in a sentence.
  • Origin of the word
• Once a participant begins spelling, no clarification requests will be entertained.
• Participants must spell the word clearly and distinctly, letter by letter.
• The contestant, in 30 seconds, will then pronounce the word, spell the word, and pronounce the word again.
• The participant must:
  • Pronounce the word before the spelling
  • Pronounce the word again after the word is spelled
  • Speak clearly and loudly
• If the student still begins to spell without pronouncing the word, he/she will be disqualified from the competition.
• The participant shall have 10 seconds from the time he/she pronounces the word until he/she must begin spelling the word.
• Having started to spell a word, a student may stop and start over, retracing the spelling from the beginning. However, in the retracing, there can be no change of letters and their sequence from those first pronounced. If any letter and/or their sequence are changed in the respelling, the speller will be disqualified.

Levels of Difficulty.

1. Round 1: Common academic vocabulary; frequently used English words
2. Round 2: Intermediate level vocabulary
3. Round 3: Advanced academic vocabulary; Less common English words

Judging Criteria

Preliminary  Round

• Each correctly spelled word = 10 mark.
• Each incorrectly spelled word = 0 mark.
• No negative marking.

Elimination Round (Semi) - Top 5 will be selected for the final round.
Correct spelling  - 10 marks (First word)- 5 marks (Alternate word).

Final Round 
Correct Spelling - 20 mark.

In the event of a tie, additional challenge words will be given until the tie is broken

Responsibilities of Officials

Pronouncer.

• Pronounce each word clearly.
• Provides meaning and sentence upon request.
• Maintains consistency and neutrality.

Judges.

• Verify spelling accuracy.
• Resolve disputes based on the official word list.
• Make final decisions on contested cases.

Timekeeper

• Monitor response time.

Awards

• First Prize (Champion)
• Second Prize (Runner-up)
• Third Prize
• Certificate of Participation for all contestants 

Decision of Judges

The judges' decision shall be final and binding on all participants and shall not be subject to appeal.
