Spell Bee

Objectives

  • To improve English vocabulary and spelling skills.
  • To encourage correct pronunciation and word usage.
  • To promote confidence in public speaking.

 

Eligibility

  • Open to all registered Undergraduate (UG) students.

 

Competition Format
Round 1: Preliminary Written Round

  • All participants will be given a written spelling test.
  • Participants will write the correct spelling of words dictated by the moderator.
  • The top scorers (e.g., 10–20 participants) will qualify for the oral rounds.

Round 2: Oral Elimination Round

  • Participants spell words orally, one at a time.
  • Correct spelling allows the participant to proceed to the next round.
  • Incorrect spelling results in elimination.

Round 3: Final Round

  • Finalists compete until winners are determined.
  • The last participant remaining after correctly spelling the assigned word and an additional championship word shall be declared the winner.

 

Rules for Participants

  • Both British and American English spellings can be used.
  • The pronouncer will give a clear pronunciation of the word, use it in a sentence, and provide its meaning if requested.
  • Participants may request:
    • Repetition of the word.
    • Meaning of the word.
    • Usage in a sentence.
  • Once a participant begins spelling, no clarification requests will be entertained.
  • Participants must spell the word clearly and distinctly, letter by letter.
  • Participants may correct themselves before indicating completion.
  • After saying "final" or after a clear indication of completion, no further correction is allowed.
  • Any incorrect letter sequence constitutes a misspelling.
  • Participants must maintain discipline and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
  • Participants will be given 30 seconds from the completion of the word pronunciation to begin spelling. Failure to respond within the allotted time may result in disqualification for that word.
  • Participants must bring their own pen for the written round.

 

Levels of Difficulty.

  • Common academic vocabulary
  • Frequently used English words
  • Intermediate-level vocabulary
  • Advanced academic vocabulary
  • Less common English words

 

Judging Criteria

Written Round

  • Each correctly spelled word = 1 mark.
  • Each incorrectly spelled word = 0 mark.
  • No negative marking.

Oral Round (Semi) - Top 5 will be selected for the final round.
Correct spelling - 1 mark.

Final Round 
Correct Spelling - 1 mark.

In the event of a tie, additional challenge words will be given until the tie is broken

 

Responsibilities of Officials

Pronouncer.

  • Pronounce each word clearly.
  • Provides meaning and sentence upon request.
  • Maintains consistency and neutrality.

Judges.

  • Verify spelling accuracy.
  • Resolve disputes based on the official word list.
  • Make final decisions on contested cases.

Timekeeper

  • Monitor response time.

Awards

  • First Prize (Champion)
  • Second Prize (Runner-up)
  • Third Prize
  • Certificate of Participation for all contestants
