Theme: From Oral Tale to Written Story

 

Competition Guidelines

This theme invites participants to delve into the depths of indigenous folklore, oral traditions, and cultural memory, and to reimagine them through a refined literary lens. It emphasizes the revival of forgotten narratives by transforming ancestral voices, myths, and folk wisdom into compelling contemporary storytelling while preserving their cultural authenticity and symbolic richness.

 

Objectives

The objectives of the competition are:

  • To promote creative engagement with folk literature and oral storytelling traditions.
  • To encourage preservation and documentation of indigenous cultural narratives.
  • To enhance literary creativity through reinterpretation of traditional stories.
  • To develop awareness of cultural diversity and heritage among youth.

 

Eligibility

Open to both UG and PG  students participating in Pow-woW Lore 2026

 

Competition Format

  • Each participant will write a folk-based short story related to his/her community or indigenous community, e.g., folk tale, traditional healing system, myths, legends, or attire.
  • The story may be original, adapted, or reimagined from oral traditions, myths, or local folklore.
  • Participants will be given a fixed time duration to complete the writing task.
  • No pre-written material, notes, books, mobile phones, or electronic aids are permitted.
  • Entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges appointed by the organizing committee.
  • Evaluation will be based on creativity, cultural relevance, narrative structure, and language quality.
  • English will be used.
  • Participants will bring their writing board. Pen and paper will be provided.
  • Participants must register within the stipulated deadline announced by the organizers.
  • Participation is strictly individual.
  • Results will be announced the same day.
  • Word limit: Min. -500 words; Max. - 800 words.
  • Any form of malpractice will result in immediate disqualification.
